A blue screen can stop a workday, interrupt an online appointment, or leave you wondering whether your family photos and business files are still safe. The good news is that a blue screen does not automatically mean the computer is beyond repair. Knowing how to fix blue screen errors starts with protecting your data, reading the clues Windows provides, and making one careful change at a time.
Windows may show a blue screen with a sad face, a QR code, and a message such as “Your device ran into a problem.” It may also display a stop code like CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED, MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, or DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. That code matters. It helps narrow the issue from a broad Windows crash to a likely driver, update, hardware, or file problem.
First, Protect Your Files and Record the Stop Code
If the computer restarts after the blue screen and allows you to sign in, do not immediately begin installing random repair tools. First, back up the files that cannot be replaced. Copy important documents, photos, accounting files, customer records, and browser bookmarks to an external drive or a trusted cloud backup service.
If you use the computer for a business, prioritize current work files, financial records, email archives, and any files stored only on the local computer.
