Accidents happen—whether it’s a spilled drink, a rainy day mishap, or a full-on dunk in the sink. If your laptop or phone gets wet, acting fast can mean the difference between a quick recovery and permanent damage. Here’s what to do:

  1. Power Down Immediately
Turn off the device right away. Keeping it on can cause short circuits as water interacts with internal components.
  2. Unplug and Remove Accessories
Disconnect chargers, headphones, USB drives, and any other peripherals. For phones, remove the case, SIM card, and battery if possible. For laptops, unplug the power cord and remove external devices.
  3. Dry the Exterior
Use a lint-free cloth or paper towel to gently blot away visible moisture. Avoid rubbing, which can push water deeper into the device.
  4. Air It Out
Place the device in a dry, well-ventilated area. For phones, silica gel packets (not rice!) in a sealed bag can help absorb moisture. For laptops, position it in an inverted “tent” shape to allow drainage.
  5. Wait Before Powering On
Give the device at least 24–72 hours to dry completely. Resist the urge to test it too soon—turning it on while moisture remains can cause irreversible damage.

🚫 What Not to Do

  • Don’t use a hair dryer or microwave—it can warp components.
  • Don’t shake the device aggressively.
  • Don’t assume it’s fine just because it turns on.

If your device doesn’t respond after drying, consult a professional repair service. Many phones and laptops have water damage indicators that can help technicians assess the situation.

With quick thinking and a little patience, you might just save your soaked tech from a watery grave.
