5G Hotspot Reaches the Market
AT&T has just announced that they have created a commercially viable 5G device that has undergone successful testing for 5G browsing in Waco, Texas. This new device, the Netgear Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot, will be available for purchase for use in those regions selected for 5G testing before the end of the year. No solid release date has been confirmed and there is no word on price. AT&T successfully used 5G in September tests, but this is the first time a commercially available device has been employed.
AT&T will roll out 5G across 12 localities, to include Atlanta, Oklahoma City, and Dallas, before the end of the year, with 19 more localities to be added in 2019, among them Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
Tesla Announces New Solar Roofs
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced that, alongside the launch of new self-driving cars, 2019 will be the year Tesla start selling its solar roof concept. This product has been in the pipeline for some time, having been mooted in October 2016. The solar roof concept uses glass tiles that look the same as standard roof tiles, but contain solar cells for electricity generation.
Tesla started taking preorders for the tiles in May 2017 with plans for summer production; however, it proved more difficult than first thought to create tiles that will last as long as conventional alternatives. However, high-volume commercial production will now commence in 2019. The company says that solar roofs will cost $21.85 per square foot for a 3000 ft.² roof; this puts it below the price point previously calculated by Tesla ($24.50 per square foot) which will make it more competitive than conventional tiling.
