In a long-overdue move, Apple is giving iPad and iPhone users greater control over what appears on their screens and how they deal with their favorite apps. Users who install iOS 14 can now customize their home screen with widgets, and there’s an app drawer to help keep things uncluttered.
However, the really big change, and one that many Apple users have been asking for years, is that users can now install their own mail app and browser, rather than being forced to use the Apple Mail and Safari apps as before.
One thing to note before you get too excited is that there is a bug in the iOS 14 system, which is that if you need to restart your iPhone/iPad, the device will default to the proprietary offerings and you’ll have to set it all up again. However, the company have promised that they will address this soon.
To set your preferred choice of browser or email as the default setting, simply go into Settings and find the app you want to use, tap on it and select, as appropriate, Default Browser App or Default Email App. Once you’ve done this, if you click on a link it will be opened with your choice of browser, or if you tap an email address to send a message your email provider will come up.
