Windows 7 End of Support

Users still using Windows 7 have been frequently receiving reminders from Microsoft that they should upgrade to Windows 10. The reason for this is that Microsoft is withdrawing security support for Windows 7 after January 14 next year. Some paid-for support will be available to businesses who want to stick with Windows 7, but personal users won’t get any more free updates, meaning that any Windows 7 machine will become increasingly open to hackers, and more and more new software won’t be capable of running on a Windows 7 machine.

Microsoft caused much annoyance to Windows 7 users with its original upgrade reminders, which were frequent and could not be blocked. The company seems to have learned a lesson this time around, as users can now simply tick a “don’t remind me again” checkbox and the reminders will be stopped. If for any reason they keep on coming, simply go to Control Panel> System and Security> Windows Update, find the update KB4493132, right-click it and select “hide update”.

However, even though you might feel relieved about not being nagged by Microsoft any longer, you shouldn’t go on ignoring the message. It is never a good idea to use an obsolete system once support has been withdrawn, as it’s going to leave you open to malware, hackers and all sorts of other problems you could do without. There are still a number of ways to get Windows 10 upgrades for free, even though the official free upgrade period is over. Alternatively, you could switch to Apple, a Chromebook or install Linux on your PC – whatever you choose, it’s best to be secure.
