Even if you have the latest version of Windows 10, you might still find that sometimes your computer doesn’t run as fast or as smoothly as you would like. Below we share five ways in which you can easily improve performance.

1. Disable start-up programs: Every computer will have a number of programs that it starts up when you turn on your PC, even if you rarely need or use them. You can control this by launching task manager with Ctrl-Shift-Esc, and clicking Startup; any programs listed that you don’t actually need at startup can be right-clicked and disabled.

2. Disable visuals: Windows 10 has a sophisticated library of visual effects that will run well on newer equipment, but can affect performance on older computers. You can do this manually by going into System Properties >Advanced >Performance >Settings, but a simpler way is just to go into Settings and click “Adjust for best performance”, which tells Windows to turn off anything adversely affecting computer speed.

3.Troubleshooting: By typing “troubleshooting” into the Windows search box, you can find the Troubleshooting Control Panel; go to Run maintenance tasks>Troubleshoot and help prevent computer problems and Windows will find any problems causing poor computer performance and fix them for you.

4.Performance Monitor: By typing perfmon /report into the Windows search box (perfmon must be followed by a space) the Resource and Performance Monitor will launch, presenting you (after a time) with a report on your entire system. Check the Warnings section which will alert you to any serious issues with your computer, and then check the Resource Overview section, which will show you how your hardware is working and give you clues as to what could be done to improve, e.g. if 90% of your RAM is being utilized, you might consider adding more.

5.Remove bloatware: Bloatware and adware (some of it, annoyingly, added by computer manufacturers) can severely affect computer speed and performance. A number of free programs are available that can search out this annoying brake on computer speed: SlimComputer, Should I Remove It? and PC Decrapifier can all do this for you.
